Unliftable Lightness

“Unliftable Lightness” is a total installation of glass blocks, inside which a fragment of the “Dance of the Little Swans” from Swan Lake is projected. The work treats this image as one of the basic cultural codes — a recognisable form of collective memory. Stripped of its music and its romantic context, the dance is reduced here to the pure mechanics of synchronous movement, to repetition and discipline.

Glass blocks and soap bubbles form two interconnected lines in the project. The bubbles act as an image of ephemeral norms, myths and half-conscious assumptions that permeate a society. The glass blocks, by contrast, embody a social structure already formed — rigid, stable, transparent only on the surface. Through this juxtaposition the work considers how intangible cultural constructions gradually build a durable collective framework of perception and behaviour.
