Contour

“Contour” is an installation about how ephemeral layers of cultural myths, norms and collective assumptions gradually crystallise into a stable inner structure that shapes perception, behaviour and worldview. The work treats this process as the emergence of a contour — a given form of movement and a way of seeing the world.

The outer layer is drawn from the mosaics of the Moscow Palace of Youth, translated into a translucent graphic shell. Removed from their original context, they no longer function as a decorative motif but as a residual scheme of perception — a visual trace of a late-Soviet collective promise and its normative image of the future. The inner layer is built around a projection of the “Dance of the Little Swans” and a stream of soap bubbles, joining a stable form of collective movement to the ephemeral layer of ideological, media and psychological constructions.

The installation was made for the roof of the Moscow Palace of Youth — the very building whose mosaics form its outer layer. Taken from the façade and translated into a translucent shell, they return to their former place already as a scheme, through which both the city and the sky remain visible.
