A Special Bearing

The project “A Special Bearing” brings together series of assemblages built from easel paintings, neon tubing and embroidery. Each series opens the shared theme in its own way — socio-cultural phenomena of the post-Soviet condition. As a mode of statement I use quotations from memes, posts, classic Russian literature and folklore.

In this project I play with the meanings of well-known everyday phrases that, in today’s context, sometimes take on an entirely different sense. The painted scenes are chosen to help unfold the statement — echoing the native landscape, the home, the existential.

The project examines how the memory of a cultural code interacts with current history, seeking out the bifurcation points of contemporary Russian society.
