Our Garden

The project grows out of my work with media news feeds — photographs and quotations from periodicals and news agencies that record the routine events of the country’s state life. These photographs, and collages made from them, serve as the ground for white porcelain flowers, which in turn stand for the contribution of each individual person to our society.
“Our Garden” is a play on contrasts of meaning and image: brutal men in uniform set against delicate white flowers — an antithesis to cruelty.
I chose white flowers as a metaphor of fragility and vulnerability: a picked flower wilts quickly, its time is short. I try not to draw attention to the photographs first; I let the viewer see the flower in its fragility and refinement, and only then consider the meaning of the black-and-white documentary images. At the centre stands a human life, its rights, and how they are realised in contemporary life.
